Frankenstein by Mary Shelley

Series: Standalone

Publication: January 3th 2013 by Penguin Books (first published in 1818)

Source: Purchased

Goodreads Summary: Mary Shelley began writing Frankenstein when she was only eighteen. At once a Gothic thriller, a passionate romance, and a cautionary tale about the dangers of science, Frankenstein tells the story of committed science student Victor Frankenstein. Obsessed with discovering the cause of generation and life and bestowing animation upon lifeless matter, Frankenstein assembles a human being from stolen body parts but; upon bringing it to life, he recoils in horror at the creature's hideousness. Tormented by isolation and loneliness, the once-innocent creature turns to evil and unleashes a campaign of murderous revenge against his creator, Frankenstein.

Frankenstein, an instant bestseller and an important ancestor of both the horror and science fiction genres, not only tells a terrifying story, but also raises profound, disturbing questions about the very nature of life and the place of humankind within the cosmos: What does it mean to be human? What responsibilities do we have to each other? How far can we go in tampering with Nature? In our age, filled with news of organ donation genetic engineering, and bio-terrorism, these questions are more relevant than ever.

Coraline by Neil Gaiman

Series: Standalone

Publication: August 4th 2002 by HarperCollins

Source: Library Book

Goodreads Summary: Coraline lives with her preoccupied parents in part of a huge old house--a house so huge that other people live in it, too... round, old former actresses Miss Spink and Miss Forcible and their aging Highland terriers ("We trod the boards, luvvy") and the mustachioed old man under the roof ("'The reason you cannot see the mouse circus,' said the man upstairs, 'is that the mice are not yet ready and rehearsed.'") Coraline contents herself for weeks with exploring the vast garden and grounds. But with a little rain she becomes bored--so bored that she begins to count everything blue (153), the windows (21), and the doors (14). And it is the 14th door that--sometimes blocked with a wall of bricks--opens up for Coraline into an entirely alternate universe. Now, if you're thinking fondly of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe or Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, you're on the wrong track. Neil Gaiman's Coraline is far darker, far stranger, playing on our deepest fears. And, like Roald Dahl's work, it is delicious.

Tales from the Haunted Mansion: Volume I by Walt Disney Company

Series: Tales from the Haunted Mansion: Volume I

Publication: July 19th 2016 by Disney Press

Source: Borrowed from my sister, teehee

Goodreads Summary: Welcome, foolish mortals, to Disney Press' spookiest chapter book series yet: Tales from the Haunted Mansion! Based on the attractions from the Disney Parks, each new book tells the story of one of the Haunted Mansion's 999 ghosts. With eerie illustrations throughout and a beautiful three-piece cloth cover, the books are designed to look like they came straight from the library in the Haunted Mansion.
Tales from the Haunted Mansion is a fun, spooky ride, just like the attraction from the Disney Parks. And if readers are familiar with the ride, they'll see elements of it throughout the entire story, from items straight of the Mansion (are those pictures stretching?) to lyrics from the narration that is heard in each Doom Buggy.
In this bone-chilling book, you will hear the terrifying tales of the Fearsome Foursome--four kids who look to out-scare each other. But just wait until they hear my spooky stories. Who am I? I am Amicus Arcane, your librarian and host. Your Ghost Host. So read on... if you dare!

The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson

For those of you unaware or who do not follow my BookTube channel, I am participating in Sbooktober. It's created by five different BookTubers and is brand new this year. This week, October 23-29, they are hosting a readathon. There are seven challenges for the readathon and this first book that I'm about to review is the first challenge. It's the group book that they picked for everyone to read and the other six challenges we were allowed to pick our own books. So, without further ado, here is my review of Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House.

Series: Standalone

Publication: November 28th 2006 by Penguin Classics (first published in 1959)

Source: Library Book

Goodreads Summary: The classic supernatural thriller by an author who helped define the genre

First published in 1959, Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House has been hailed as a perfect work of unnerving terror. It is the story of four seekers who arrive at a notoriously unfriendly pile called Hill House: Dr. Montague, an occult scholar looking for solid evidence of a "haunting"; Theodora, his lighthearted assistant; Eleanor, a friendless, fragile young woman well acquainted with poltergeists; and Luke, the future heir of Hill House. At first, their stay seems destined to be merely a spooky encounter with inexplicable phenomena. But Hill House is gathering its powers—and soon it will choose one of them to make its own.

Goodreads Summary: When Colin Cavendish, the new earl of Drayson, informs Lucy Beresford that she and her mother need to vacate the house they've called home for the past two years, Lucy is fit to be tied. They have no money, no relations they can turn to for help, and nowhere to go. How dare the earl break the promise his father had made to the Beresfords without so much as a twinge of conscience?

Fate plays her hand when Lucy discovers the earl unconscious and injured in the middle of the road. When he awakens with no recollection of who he is, Lucy seizes the opportunity to teach the earl a much-needed lesson in humility and tells him that he is nothing more than a mere servant. Her servant, in fact.

And thus begins the charming tale of a pompous lord and an impetuous young woman, caught together in a web so tangled that it begs the question: Will they ever get out?

Series: The Illuminae Files #1

Publication: October 20th 2015 by Knopf Books for Young Readers

Source: Purchased

Goodreads Summary: This morning, Kady thought breaking up with Ezra was the hardest thing she’d have to do.

This afternoon, her planet was invaded.

The year is 2575, and two rival megacorporations are at war over a planet that’s little more than an ice-covered speck at the edge of the universe. Too bad nobody thought to warn the people living on it. With enemy fire raining down on them, Kady and Ezra—who are barely even talking to each other—are forced to fight their way onto an evacuating fleet, with an enemy warship in hot pursuit.

But their problems are just getting started. A deadly plague has broken out and is mutating, with terrifying results; the fleet's AI, which should be protecting them, may actually be their enemy; and nobody in charge will say what’s really going on. As Kady hacks into a tangled web of data to find the truth, it's clear only one person can help her bring it all to light: the ex-boyfriend she swore she'd never speak to again.

Told through a fascinating dossier of hacked documents—including emails, schematics, military files, IMs, medical reports, interviews, and more—Illuminae is the first book in a heart-stopping, high-octane trilogy about lives interrupted, the price of truth, and the courage of everyday heroes.

Mad About the Boy by Helen Fielding | Audible Audiobook

Series: Bridget Jones #3

Publication: October 15th 2013 by Random House Audio

Source: Purchased

Goodreads Summary: Bridget Jones is back!

Great comic writers are as rare as hen's teeth. And Helen is one of a very select band who have created a character of whom the very thought makes you smile. Bridget Jones' Diary, charting the life of a 30-something singleton in London in the 1990s was a huge international bestseller, published in 40 countries and selling over 15 million copies worldwide. Its sequel, Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, published soon after was also a major international bestseller. Both were made into films starring Renée Zellweger, Hugh Grant and Colin Firth.

Set in the present, the new novel will explore a different phase in Bridget's life with an entirely new scenario. As Helen Fielding has said: "If people laugh as much reading it as I am while writing it then we'll all be very happy."

*I picked this summary as all others gave away a major plot point of the book*

My Thoughts:

First of all: what the heck? This is an 8 BOOK SERIES? WAT.
*My review of the first book with spoiler tags here.*

It. Was. Amazing. What even was ACOTAR compared to this?? I'm so happy with how this book turned out and has completely redeemed my belief in the characters of this series. It's no secret that I didn't really care for ACOTAR. I have a whole review with spoiler tags all about the various things in it that made zero sense. Trust me, there's a lot. To be fair, it was the first of Sarah's books I'd ever read and now that I have read a couple others I better understand her books/style I think. Although, to be fair, I think if I reread ACOTAR, I still would give it my very-generous-at-the-time rating of 3 stars.

I don't know where even to begin. This book has the perfect balance between action and character development. It's full of emotion and realism and I LOVED it. Gone is the Feyre cross-breed of Katniss and Bella Swan that I despised so much in ACOTAR. We're given a newborn Feyre who finds her own feet and strength to make her own decisions. Sure, there were still times I wanted to tell her to stop being stupid but those times were shortlived compared to other characters I've seen (including Celaena), and Feyre would return to being the more mature, likeable version of herself that now lives. I loved who Feyre became in this and reading as she came into her own. I cheered for her the entire time.
Rhysand. I loved Rhysand in the first book. He's actually one of the only things I listed as a "like" in my ACOTAR review from last year. I wanted to see more of him. Wanted to figure out who he really was and what his true motives were. Let me tell you: you get all of that and more in this book. I wish I could write more but, alas, spoilers. Suffice it to say, I love him and I loved what happened in this book concerning him and just yes.
Of course, we are given some scenes with some of our original characters such as Tamlin and Lucien, but let me just say, I never cared for Tamlin and I'm glad that I never fell into that fangirl love so many readers had. Tamlin has always reminded me of Edward Cullen and he continues to keep that comparison well and alive. Lucien, poor Lucien. I do wish his history wasn't what it was and that he didn't have to live his life in the Spring Court. He deserves better.
I really liked the new characters introduced in this book. The Night Court certainly holds some interesting people and I enjoyed reading and learning more about them.

I loved how the plot was paced. I think it had the perfect balance between action and harrowing scenes and fun, playful scenes that allowed us more beautiful glimpses into the world of Prythian. The way the plot played out gave us plenty of new insight into the seven courts and I really liked learning more about them. It gave me the happy feels that I got when reading the Percy Jackson series and learning more about the different cabins and demigods. And, of course, I LOVED the romance in this book. I do think that if you aren't a romance fan, this book may be overwhelming for you and you won't enjoy it as much. I mean, it's literally laced throughout the book and is a deeper theme even than ACOTAR. Although the romance in this sequel is much different and less starry-eyed I would say. I loved what it brought to the book and felt it was absolutely perfect for this sequel.

Lastly, I'm glad my predictions for this book didn't run true. If you read my review on ACOTAR, you'll see I predicted a love triangle and predicted that Feyre would spend all of her time running back and forth between two guys. I'm so glad that I was wrong (and I really hate being wrong lol). Bravo, Sarah. That's all I got to say. Bravo.

Likes: Literally all of it. I loved how Feyre changed and who she became. I loved Rhysand. I loved the new characters introduced. I loved the plot. I loved the romance. I loved the new glimpses into the world of Prythian. I loved it all.

Dislikes: Literally cannot think of anything. I'm glad that I never liked Tamlin...

Overall:
Recommend? Yes!!!
Reading the Next One? Yes!!!

Series: Standalone

Publication: July 19th 2016 by Simon Pulse

Source: Received a free copy of this in exchange for an honest review from NetGalley. Thank you!

Goodreads Summary: The Devil Wears Prada meets Sex and the City in a wickedly funny debut novel about a girl who lands a dream internship at a magazine in New York City. If only she hadn’t lied about being a dating expert on her resume…

Harper Anderson has always thought she should have been born somewhere more glamorous than her sleepy Northern California suburb. After all, how many water polo matches and lame parties in Bobby McKittrick’s backyard can one girl take?

Already resigned to working at a Skinny B’s Juice Press for the summer, Harper is shocked when the ultra-prestigious teen magazine, Shift, calls to say they want her to be their teen dating blogger for the summer. All she needs to do is get her butt to New York in two days.

There’s just one teeny, tiny problem: Apart from some dance floor make-outs, Harper doesn’t have a whole lot of dating experience. So when Shift’s application asked for an “edgy” personal essay, Harper might have misappropriated her best friend’s experiences for her own. But she can just learn on the job...right? Will the house of lies Harper has built around her dream job collapse all around her, or will she be able to fake it until she makes it in the big city?

Goodreads Summary: The Wilderness Years are over! But not for long. At the end of Bridget Jones's Diary, Bridget hiccuped off into the sunset with man-of-her-dreams Mark Darcy. That Girl, Darcy: A Pride and Prejudice Story by James Ramos

Series: Standalone

Publication: October 19th 2015 by Future House Publishing

Source: Received a free copy of this in exchange for an honest review from ebooksforreview.com. Thank you!

Goodreads Summary: IT IS A TRUTH UNIVERSALLY ACKNOWLEDGED that geeky guys never get to date the pretty girls with permanent scowls.

To Elliott Bennett, life is simple. It’s all parties, skateboarding, and arguing over who would win in a fight between Hulk and Superman with his friends. It’s his senior year, and he wants nothing more than to soak up his final year of freedom before real life begins.

That is, until Darcy Fitzwilliam and her best friend Bridget move in to the only mansion in the neighborhood. When Elliot meets Darcy at a party, he finds out that she isn’t into skateboarding (which he lives for), she hates science-fiction (which he loves), and she thinks his friends are a pack of morons (which, honestly, might be half true)—and yet, there’s something irritatingly intriguing about her.

When Elliot’s cousin Jake starts to date her friend Bridget, it complicates Elliot’s plans to ignore the scowling Darcy for the rest of the year. Why is Darcy so . . . ugh? Elliott doesn’t know, but for some reason, is determined to find out—even if she doesn’t know the difference between Star Trek and Star Wars.

Series: The Field Party #1

Publication: August 25th 2015 by Simon Pulse

Source: Purchased

Goodreads Summary: To everyone who knows him, West Ashby has always been that guy: the cocky, popular, way-too-handsome-for-his-own-good football god who led Lawton High to the state championships. But while West may be Big Man on Campus on the outside, on the inside he’s battling the grief that comes with watching his father slowly die of cancer.

Two years ago, Maggie Carleton’s life fell apart when her father murdered her mother. And after she told the police what happened, she stopped speaking and hasn’t spoken since. Even the move to Lawton, Alabama, couldn’t draw Maggie back out. So she stayed quiet, keeping her sorrow and her fractured heart hidden away.

As West’s pain becomes too much to handle, he knows he needs to talk to someone about his father—so in the dark shadows of a post-game party, he opens up to the one girl who he knows won’t tell anyone else.

West expected that talking about his dad would bring some relief, or at least a flood of emotions he couldn’t control. But he never expected the quiet new girl to reply, to reveal a pain even deeper than his own—or for them to form a connection so strong that he couldn’t ever let her go…

The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins | Audible Audiobook

Series: Standalone

Publication: January 13th 2015 by Penguin Audio

Source: Purchased

Goodreads Summary: debut psychological thriller about a woman who becomes emotionally entangled in a murder investigation because of something she witnesses on her daily commute.

Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning and every night. Every day she rattles over the same track junctions, flashes past the same stretch of cozy suburban homes. And every day she stops at the same signal and she sees the same couple, breakfasting on their roof deck, living the perfect life that Rachel craves for herself - a lifestyle she recently lost. She looks forward to observing this household every morning, even makes up names and narratives for its residents. Then one day Rachel sees someone new in their garden, and soon after, the woman who lived there disappears.

Unable to keep this information to herself, Rachel offers what she knows to the police, and in the process is drawn into the lives of the couple she thought of as Jason and Jess but whose names - she has learned from the news - are really Megan and Scott Hipwell.

But the police accuse Rachel of being unreliable, and it's true that her memories can't always be trusted. Plus there are the stories that her ex-husband's new wife has been spreading about her. By the time Megan's body is found, Rachel is in over her head, intricately entangled in the details of the investigation, as well as in the lives of everyone involved. Has she put others in danger? Has she done more harm than good?

A compulsively readable, emotionally immersive, Hitchcockian thriller that draws comparisons to Gone Girl, The Silent Wife, or Before I Go to Sleep, this is an electrifying debut embraced by listeners across markets and categories.
