My Thoughts:

Between 4.5-4.75 stars but I loved it! If you've been with my reviews for a while, you know that I prefer to go into books knowing very little of their summaries. The only thing I knew about this book was that it involved music and that the music written in the storyline was actually made by Colleen Hoover and a musician so that you're able to listen to it as you read the story. That really is what I feel makes the books so unique and I LOVED that part to it. But this book has much more to it than just that, which leads to plenty of readers binge reading it just as I did.

I've only read a small handful of books that had a deaf person as the main character so that definitely interested me for this book. Diversity in YA/NA books is typically something glommed over in my opinion and it was so nice to read something a bit different from the norm. The characters were interesting and realistic and relatable and I loved all of them in different ways. I loved Sydney in this. She's such a relatable character and I love that she is strong but vulnerable. Yes, she cried A LOT in the book but I like that she kept her heart open and wasn't afraid to express her emotions. Do I agree with all of her choices? Uh no. But I did like her as a person and felt that she definitely encompassed a lot of character traits most 22-year-olds would have. Ridge. Oh, Ridge. He's such a fun character. I like that we got to see so much development with him from how he grew up to how he lives his life now. I love that we got alternating point of views for Sydney and Ridge so that we could get into their heads. It definitely added a great detail to Ridge's side of the story and it wouldn't have been the same without it. Warren and Bridget were both fun characters as well. I definitely enjoyed Bridget and I could still laugh when thinking about how she first thought Sydney was deaf too and would yell all of her sentences to her. Warren irritated me sometimes but he definitely added a comic relief to some of the situations.

The plot went nothing like I thought it would but I really liked it. I've always been fond of books that feature text messages/e-mails, etc. as a form of writing the book and it definitely fit for this story. It was intriguing to read as Sydney and Ridge figured out how to communicate with each other and how to make their new music partnership work. I liked how mature their friendship was and how they tried to weather everything they went through. Was the romance perfect? No. Did the characters say all the right things at the right times to make perfect moments? No. But that's how real life is and it was so fitting for this story. Minor plotlines were organically brought around and I literally couldn't put this book down. I just kept wanting more and more and more. I went to work and all I could think about was what was going to happen and how much I wanted to get to the next song!

I love music. That's no secret. So having a book with characters actually writing lyrics was fun enough for me but to have the music actually available for readers to listen to was so amazing. I couldn't wait to get to each song so that I could stop and listen to the track that went along with it and brought the lyrics to life. It kind of felt like a 4D movie where being able to listen to the music of the book brought a whole new dimension for the reader and I truly appreciate the effort that went into it from Colleen and Griffin. Is it my favorite type of music? Not at all. But I will probably end up picking up at least one track for my iPod.

Likes: The characters! The plotline unfolded organically. The music aspect to the book and that you can actually listen to the music the characters wrote.
The emotionality of it--it's been a long time since I've read a book that made me feel so many things. Good beginners New Adult read.

Dislikes: For one thing, I think it's absolutely ridiculous Sydney didn't bother learning even the basics of sign language for Ridge. I mean, you live in his apartment for three months and never learn anything or try to communicate with him in that way? I just know that I wouldn't have done the same and I felt that was a strange part of the book. It's also a little unusual for deaf people to write in everyday language as the hearing do. Since sign language is a bit different from how we speak, even when they type things out such as how Ridge does in the book, it doesn't read like it does from a hearing person and normally is missing a few words here and there and doesn't always make sense so I found it really interesting that Ridge has no problem with written communication. The ending scene was pretty awkward and I normally am not bothered by things like that.

Overall:
Recommend? YES!!
