Remembrance by Meg Cabot

Series: Mediator #7

Publication: February 2nd 2016 by William Morrow Paperbacks

Source: Purchased

Goodreads Summary: Fifteen years after the release of the first Mediator novel, #1 New York Times bestselling author Meg Cabot returns with a deliciously sexy new entry to a fan-favorite series. Suze Simon—all grown up and engaged to her once-ghostly soulmate—faces a vengeful spirit and an old enemy bent on ending Suze's wedded bliss before it begins.

You can take the boy out of the darkness.

But you can’t take the darkness out of the boy.

All Susannah Simon wants is to make a good impression at her first job since graduating from college (and since becoming engaged to Dr. Jesse de Silva).

But when she’s hired as a guidance counselor at her alma mater, she stumbles across a decade-old murder, and soon ancient history isn’t all that’s coming back to haunt her. Old ghosts as well as new ones are coming out of the woodwork, some to test her, some to vex her, and it isn’t only because she’s a mediator, gifted with second sight.

From a sophomore haunted by the murderous specter of a child, to ghosts of a very different kind—including Paul Slater, Suze’s ex, who shows up to make a bargain Suze is certain must have come from the Devil himself—Suze isn’t sure she’ll make it through the semester, let alone to her wedding night.

Suze is used to striking first and asking questions later. But what happens when ghosts from her past—including one she found nearly impossible to resist—strike first?

What happens when old ghosts come back to haunt you?

If you’re a mediator, you might have to kick a little ass.

My Thoughts:

All righty. I really liked this. But the whole plot was just a giant What? to me.

I loved that there was another installment to the Mediator series just as I was excited for the new installment of The Princess Diaries. But just as with The Princess Diaries, this new installment underwhelmed me. While I felt Royal Wedding was just a mess of plotlines all thrown together, this time with Remembrance it's the entire main plot line made no sense to me.

The main plot line just doesn't make sense to me. And then it isn't even really resolved by the end of the book. It's only kind of slapdash, quick-fix resolved which leaves me wondering if the exact same plot line will be the focus again for book 8 if Cabot decides to write one.

Ignoring the whole main plot thing, I loved seeing some of my favorite characters again. Although it's been at least a couple years since I've read the Mediator series, I was still able to remember a good chunk of it and be able to catch up enough to enjoy the read. I do think Cabot could've done a bit better of a job in recapping a bit for new readers though (something she did a good job with in Royal Wedding in my opinion but not in this one). We get to see pretty much all of the old gang and it was nice to see how their lives had gone.

*This bit will have Royal Wedding spoilers within the spoiler tags so beware if you haven't read that one*
Although I did find it hard not to compare this with Royal Wedding (Princess Diaries 11). There are many similarities between them, which of course since they're written by the same author you should expect, but also it kind of felt like she wrote these at the same time and just changed the names. The same old characters that caused romantic conflicts in the past pop up in both stories. They both like to "play" at things such as Mia and Michael "play" firefighter and Jesse asks Suze if she wants to "play" doctor. There is a shocking reveal of true parentage in both books. Their endings are also remarkably similar. Remembrance is by far better written than Royal Wedding in my opinion, but I wouldn't exactly call it unique.

It's a good book, don't get me wrong. I'm glad I bought it and read it and have it to add to my collection of the Mediator books. I like it far more than I did Royal Wedding, but I was a little disappointed with it. Just a little.

Likes: Seeing the old gang again. Pacing was good. Suze is still Suze. Becca. Becca's plot line was very touching and I think Cabot handled the subject matter very well. Suze's stepnieces.

Dislikes: Paul again? So many similarities to Princess Diaries 11. After reading Suze whining about something forever only to have it no longer be an issue only a week before their wedding irritated me.
