Goodreads Summary: As Hitler’s armies overrun France, Rudolf von Schoenenburg, a young Austrian baron, is living in exile in England. Though his true love, Hannah, is engaged to another man, Rudi and Hannah risk their lives together to help rescue thousands of British Troops from Dunkirk. Their powerful love story develops against the backdrop of the Battle of Britain and an old world being blown to pieces.

Rudi’s family and friends suffer under the nightly barrage of bombs and rockets of the London Blitz while he pilots a British fighter plane in what looks like an impossible defense of the small island. Each night is a desperate fight for survival, each dawn a miracle.

While Hannah spends her days and nights helping to provide early warning of German air attacks, she realizes that every hour of every day is precious. Each moment carries the threat of sudden death. As the world around her changes, should Hannah allow her passion for Rudi to overcome promises she made to her dying father in what seems like another lifetime?

My Thoughts:

I really enjoyed this book regardless that I haven't read the previous two in the series. I'm sure it's even more enjoyable if you have read the previous books, but I think that it's easy to follow and Vandagriff gives a good amount of background information for readers so that it's not necessary to read the previous books to understand what's going on but it doesn't overwhelm the reader with backstory.

This book is filled with interesting, diverse characters in different circumstances. I loved that we were able to see basically every walk of life during this time period through the different characters without it seeming forced or unrealistic in their ties to each other. We get to see soldiers, displaced refugees, nurses, undercover agents, and more. I loved seeing the different characters' romances develop, and in some cases deepen, and of course the setting of this time period helped enhance it.

Admittedly, I know very little about what life was like during WWII but I feel as if this book is a good representation of it. Like I mentioned, we get to see multiple views of what life was like during this time. I also enjoyed that not only do you get to read about the actual battles taking place but also what life was like before the battles when there was just apprehension and terror about what was going on in other places where Hitler was taking over.

Overall, this book touches a lot of areas and was a very enjoyable, easy read for me.

Likes: Literally all of the characters. I loved being able to see different types of people in different settings during this time period and really being able to see a well-rounded view of WWII life.

Dislikes: Some grammar and spelling errors. I thought it was a bit weird that one of the romances was broken up and the "dumpee" never tries to talk to the person again or resolve it.

Overall:
Recommend? Yes.
