Goodreads Summary: The mysteries of her past consume her.

Seventeen-year-old Kate has never stopped searching for the secrets of her past - the secrets that began with her missing birth parents. After years of every lead drying up and every hope turning false, Kate finally lucks onto a promising lead.

Determined to find the truth once and for all, Kate travels to the gritty New Jersey shore. But what she finds is worse than she ever could have imagined. She can't hide from who she is, and now she must face the awful consequences of finding the very people she should have been hiding from.

Some secrets should stay dead and buried.

My Thoughts:

I'm kind of torn about this book because on one hand I did really enjoy reading it but there were some things that I think it would have been much better without. Overall it's a good read for people looking for young adult with a bit of a crime element to it.

I've never read any books with this type of crime in it so I can't really comment on if it's realistic or not, but I did find it very interesting and it made me keep wanting to read it. A lot happens in this book and we really go on the journey with Kate to uncover the truth about her birth parents. I liked that the plot unfolded organically and that we really got into Kate's life both before her journey (her family life, her school, friends, etc.) and in her journey, but I think it could be a bit boring to some readers with the amount of detail used (I personally didn't mind). The main issue I had with the plotline was the random turn it took with Jace. In some ways it made sense because of Ellie's connection with him but I really just didn't see the purpose he served and felt he just broke up the cohesiveness of the story. It's one of those books where just so much happens that I feel like the author had too many good ideas and smushed too much into one book in an effort to try to fit everything they loved.

The characters were okay. A little stiff and slightly unrealistic but not boring for me. There were a couple times I found myself wondering why some characters didn't think certain events were strange, and also just their behavior in general was strange at times.

Lastly, I'm left wondering if anyone proofread this before sending it to publishing. There are multiple times where characters' names are mixed up (such as when Kate is wearing Duran's hoodie, than suddenly it's said to be Colby's before changing back to Duran's/Kate's sister's ages being mixed up and one said to be older than the other then flip-flopping, etc). Of course, because I am a Grammar freak, there are grammar errors and spelling errors which always grate against my nerves. Italics were used when they clearly weren't supposed to be italicized, as if someone had missed that the italicize button was still on in Word when ending a character's thought process. Lastly, there was a really random part where the book changes tenses and suddenly Kate is narrating in first person even though the entire rest of the book is in third. ???

Overall, I gave this book four stars because I liked reading it. I liked the crime element it has and the way the plot ran. Kate isn't my favorite type of character but she carried the book okay. If you're looking for a young adult book with some crime thrown in, I'd say this would be a good pick.

Likes: Plot ran very well and organically. I loved the crime elements in it. It was just plain enjoyable to read.

Dislikes: So many editing errors. Jace was so random, what even?

Overall:
Recommend? Yes.
Reading the Next One? Not sure. Maybe eventually but it's not high on my list.
